Fans of Caribbean music will have two opportunities to enjoy the genre in downtown Durham this week: a free lecture by Vincent Joos, Ph.D., of Duke University on the roof on Wednesday, March 2 and the spectacular globalFEST: Creole Carnival Tour show at the Carolina Theatre on Friday, March 4.
During Joos’ interactive lecture, he will discuss and play records of Haitian and Jamaican popular music and analyze its origins on the roof from 5:30-6:30pm Wednesday.
On Friday, March 4 at 8 p.m., the globalFEST: Creole Carnival Tour rolls into the historic Carolina Theatre of Durham featuring three renowned world music acts: Brazil’s Casuarina, Emeline Michel of Haiti, and Brushy One String, the Jamaican one-stringed guitar virtuoso who was the star of NPR’s ’Tiny Desk Concert’ last Saturday.
Tickets to see globalFEST: the Creole Carnival Tour at the Carolina Theatre of Durham on Friday start at $28 and are on sale now at the Carolina Theatre box office, the venue’s website — www.carolinatheatre.org — and through Ticketmaster.com.
